Bettine Solf’s third album, „Groundhog Day”, had its premiere on the 5th August. The nine-track release features two songs you have already read about on this website, “Magazines” and “NN”. But there’s so much more to discover here, so let’s dive in and explore the whole record!
“Groundhog Day” represents a period of transition”, says Bettine. “The journey between many years of living as an immigrant in London, and the process of reconnecting with my Peruvian roots”. To everyone who has ever travelled and lived between different countries, this story rings a familiar bell. “Travel, romantic relationships, farewells, distance from family, loss, and the need to keep moving forward while building a new home”, Betinne’s list is long and full of important, but often contradicting emotions. These are moments of happiness and exhilaration, and also moments of reflection, sadness, or yearning. In the world which is constantly shrinking, more and more of us can relate to this confusing blend.
“Groundhog Day” (the song) reflects on the repetition of global events and the feeling of being trapped in cycles that seem to repeat endlessly.
What makes “Groundhog Day” special in my eyes (and ears!) is exactly this relatable aspect of artistic expression. The ability to translate difficult situations into sparks of comforting light. After all, when you’re far away from home, you feel alone more often than you would like to admit. And being able to turn your experiences into positives is a skill of a special kind.
For Bettine, a musician, performer, music producer and actor, none of these emotions feel particularly strange after years of “commuting” between Peru and the UK. It’s all about experiences and the people we meet along the way, after all. They make all the difference, even when times happen to be not exactly great. “Groundhog Day” is as much about the personal moments, as it is about the collaborative process which involved talented artists from different scenes and countries. Peru, Brazil, England. In this context, it is more than an album. As Bettine puts it herself, “it represents a network of shared experiences, creative partnerships, and a collective effort that seeks to build bridges between cultures”.
From “Landing” to “Baby”, the nine songs from “Groundhog Day” take you on a figurative journey. A special flight between Peru and the UK, where a myriad of emotions, sometimes happy, sometimes confusing, find their way out. It is as much a record of a personal experience, a diary of sorts, as it is a reference to the continuous trip many of us will find relatable. Myself included.
Musically rooted in the Peruvian tradition (which resurfaces from time to time), and blended with the familiar sounds of indie pop-rock, this album is a look into Bettine’s eclectic vibes, as well as her core fascinations. Echoing understandable inspirations by early Shakira, while occasionally dipping into the mood of some Alanis Morissette songs, Bettine opens up and shares from a place of certain vulnerability. Admitting moments of emotional fragility is never a sign of weakness, though. It takes guts, and plenty of strength to write and perform such lyrics, which are both personal and revealing.
