Picture this. East of County Cork, Ireland. The town is called Youghal, and you are in your own studio overlooking the sea. If you have ever wondered why Cordless’ music feels like liquid, now you know. A wonderfully trippy liquid, I might add.
You might remember Cordless from my last year’s posts (here and here). Made up of two musicians and producers, Spill and Skully, they have successfully created an aura of mystery around their music. And they have just returned with a new single, “Better to Forget”. Bringing what’s best in the contemporary trip hop music, the song explores the themes of learning and growing from one’s mistakes.
Musically enchanting, hypnotising, and slightly addictive, “Better to Forget” feels like a plunge into the waters of the Celtic Sea. The waves rush in your direction, taking you deep into the salty-flavoured embrace of the liquid void. Spill’s haunting vocals sound like a siren’s call. And Skully’s Hammond organ solo guides you back to the shore (being also a tribute to Skully’s father who played organ in a show band for over 40 years).
With all of these elements combined into one body of art, “Better to Forget” emerges and confirms Cordless’ re-definition of trip hop. Modern, sleek, and successfully borrowing from both downtempo and dub. It is also their latest step towards the completion of a debut album, which will be released exclusively on vinyl. Want one?
