The first single by kaeziwaezi feels like going on a surreal trip to a place that does not exist. Inspired by the “The Bachelor”, it explores “the desire to escape death through spectacle and manufactured intimacy”. Dissonant and unsettling, “Silver Horse” is a preview of kaeziwaezi’s upcoming album, “Seagulls Don’t Remember Anything”, out on the 12th June.
Musically escaping easy categorisations, it sounds like an unusual blend of jazzy aesthetic with neo-soul on hallucinogenics. Something that, years ago, you could perhaps expect from Moloko. It is quite addictive, too. No surprise there. It is exactly what you would expect from hallucinogenics after all.
“Silver Horse” is probably one of the weirdest tunes I have heard this year so far. Pleasantly weird, though. Unexpected, intelligent, and refreshing in the way it sounds. I do have a tendency to cherrypick such songs, I do realise that. But take my word for it, once you get hooked, it’s not easy to escape kaeziwaezi’s world. This Seattle-based vocalist, bassist and producer clearly knows how to keep you engaged. So, this is an invitation to get lost in her storytelling. Like in a maze which is both slightly scary and exciting at the same time. And I will be listening to the entire album in two weeks for sure!
