Olga Kouklaki “Haze”

With the nights getting longer again, here’s a fitting discovery back from 2021. Introducing Olga Kouklaki and her song, “Haze”, from an album called “Dusty Diamond”. And, yes, it is dark, mysterious but also, in some sense, it is bringing a feeling of relief.

“Haze” is a song about “transcending the human condition to a higher self”, says Olga. Musically, it is focused on a carefully selected sound of the synthesisers and a beat which can put your mind in a trance. The kind of trance which feels safe, meditational, and almost healing. The atmospheric vibe of “Haze” blends moods from the 1980s synthwave, and 1990s downtempo. This intriguing combination works surprisingly well, cleansing the mind from disturbing thoughts and offering a release of negative emotions.

The video made for the song by a French director, Laurent Kinowski, received an award for the “Best Video Clip” in the “Time To Chill” category during the Clubbing TV Awards. It is a fitting visualiser, deepening the message of “Haze” and taking it into a different dimension. Beautifully crafted, the black and white video sequences offer an extra layer of mystery and they are a true pleasure to look at. In the evening, with all lights off, and the noise-cancelling headphones on. This full immersion into the wold of “Haze” is exactly what you mind might need in the weeks leading up to the festive season. An antidote to running stressful errands in the crowded shopping centres.

Having said that, from the purely musical perspective, “Haze” is also a great introduction to Olga’s aforementioned album, “Dusty Diamond”. With almost 40 minutes of similar vibes, it can be your soundtrack to this upcoming winter season. Give it a listen and let yourselves immerse in this alternative version of chill. Unusually effective in erasing stresses of the day.
