With the very first sounds of the piano, the opening of Leajato Robinson’s “Lullaby”, you are immediately assured that this song will deliver some seriously intense emotion. Written as an homage to the genre of MGM musicals, and the artists of the period, such as Lena Horne or Judy Garland, “Lullaby” proposes a trip through different moods with a sense of sentiment and unquestionable love for music.
The various sections of the track, accentuated by delicate changes in the arrangement, are sewn together by the vocals of Carolyn Leonhart. Assuming the role of a narrator in this sonic story, she takes us by the hand for a jazz-infused walk through the images and memories of the previous century’s musicals. It feels like walking past a series of movie screens, arranged to generate emotional flashbacks, both in black-and-white, and in Technicolor.
The first demo of “Lullaby” was recorded back in 2021 and then evolved into the song which you can listen to below. With the involvement of Bennett Paster (piano and arrangement), the collaboration between various musicians resulted in a silky smooth delivery, with a balm-like qualities aimed at warming your heart.
There are many amazing little touches here, coming from various instruments which come and go, appear and disappear. Yet there is no sense of competition in this arrangement which showcases a true collaboration. Each sound is played with a full respect towards the entire song, as a contribution to the wholesome sound, melting together into one organic sonic being.
One can only wonder what comes after. When the lullaby is over, and when you wake up from this delicious jazzy dream. Where is Leajato Robinson going to take us to with his next tune?
