Here’s a preview of an exciting indie pop/rock project. Night Teacher is a duo made up of songwriter/vocalist Lilly Bechtel and producer Matt Wyatt. “Never Better” is an excerpt from their upcoming sophomore album, “Year of the Snake”. Referring to the Chinese Zodiac sign of 2025, it explores the notion of transformation and serves as a reminder to hold grace and space for this process.
“Never Better”, the single, strikes with the way the lyrics are performed. Half-spoken, half-sung, insisting on the story rather than the melody itself. “My hope is that this project will resonate with people in various stages of change of all kinds”, says Lilly. The end result is delivered with passion, emotion and the gritty fabric of her vocals which immediately leave you craving for more.
Based on a personal experience, art became the means for healing own trauma for Lilly. Interestingly, dealing with it personally transformed her future life in that healing trauma became her work. This first hand experience seems to be pivotal for the creative development of the duo’s new album. Each song is compared to notes slipped under the door or wings across the table — “I know what you are going through. I’ve been there myself”.
The intention of music such as the one performed by Night Teacher is to bring comfort, peace and, eventually, healing. A real-life transformation. Just like a snake which needs to shed its old skin in order to grow.
