Meet daschan. Her artistic story begins with growing up between Kazakhstan, Germany and the UK. This unique combination of locations and different cultures has had an impact beyond creativity, that’s for sure. But let’s focus on music, shall we? In particular, daschan’s two new singles which paint a picture of an eclectic fascination with a myriad of sounds at the same time. The power of effortlessly contrasting different vibes is what has piqued my interested in daschan’s approach to music. On one hand the debut single “will i be”, on the other, the follow-up, “sunshine”, which could not have come from a more different world.
As it usually happens, our musicality is shaped by very early memories. daschan recalls being 4 or 5 years old and listening to old Russian movie songs, played on piano by her nanny, Marina. “Everything I sang along to was melancholic”, says daschan. “The songs were always about love and loss—or at least, that’s how I remember them now.”
Unsurprisingly, daschan’s debut single, “will i be”, even though modern at the core, evokes feelings of nostalgia. It is dreamy, atmospheric and sentimental, while at the same time its beat is deeply rooted in electronic vibes, upbeat and almost danceable. In her own words, “Most of “will i be” was written and produced entirely by myself over the course of a week, during a trip to my grandmother’s home in Karaganda (Kazakhstan). I was deeply inspired by Ralphie Choo’s track “NHF” and wanted to make something similarly beautiful and unconventional. It was a burst of inspiration, and the whole process felt seamless and intuitive.”
On the other hand, we have “sunshine”, published a few weeks ago. An upbeat dance pop tune, warm and full of optimism. Described as love song, an affirmation to oneself, it explores themes of childhood, nurture, self-love and comfort. Explaining the story behind this song, daschan’s says that it “was collaborative from the very beginning. It began in a writing session with one producer and was later completely reworked with my friend and colleague Ben Fitzgerald (benzi). Before landing on the final version you can stream today, I had at least three different versions of the track.”
Having these two songs juxtaposed against one another brings out an image of an eclectic Artist whose journey is yet hard to decipher. When asked about the current influences, daschan says “the two main genres that I feel are influencing my work the most are Latin-core/Spanish dance pop, and high-fidelity jazz/pop-rock artists.”
This wide spectrum of fascinations results in a certain uniqueness which is difficult to ignore. The contrast between the variety of vibes sucks you into the daschan’s vortex of influences, making the listening experience pure mystery. It is as magnetic as it can be. A riddle that needs solving, and a hidden surprise which wants to be revealed for pure satisfaction of solving the puzzle. That’s more than you would normally expect from an emerging Artist, yet here we are.
It should not come as a surprise at this stage that daschan’s future plans go beyond music itself. “I aim to launch an initiative connecting young independent musical artists with fashion designers. I want to foster multidisciplinary collaborations between visual artists and musicians, with a focus on creating spaces, events, and communities that inspire others to make and appreciate beautiful work. Putting my own music out there facilitates that vision. Once I reach a level of confidence in my expertise, I dream of starting my own indie label, a collective, or an artist incubation project that supports young talent.
So keep your eyes and ears open for what’s to come.”
