This alternative hip hop tune represents everything I love about the genre. A groovy jazzy vibe, a positive message and a great story-telling. Designed as a parental conversation, it creates an optimistic view of a future world on a backdrop of a relaxing, chilled beat.
MC Paul Barman is a hip hop lyricist who has been produced by the likes of Prince Paul or Questlove, and specifically for this project by an Irish producer, vocalist and DJ, Glen Brady. And it’s this latest collaboration which resulted in the release of “Blessings” – a seriously the most positive hip hop track I have heard in ages.
While it is not necessarily about the positivity of the message that is a mandatory condition, there is so much dark and aggressive hip hop out there these days, that a release such as “Blessings” makes a true difference. It reminds us where the hip hop roots grow from. And how enjoyable hip hop can really be, when you just stop for a moment, and look around with your eyes open a little bit wider than usual.
So, as the lyrics of “Blessings” go: “Ok, let’s chill out. It’s been a long week. Let the song speak.”
