Grieving is a complicated process and each of us deals with it in their own unique way. For Sandi King, one of the steps in this process, was to express her emotions through music. Her upcoming album, titled “Departure”, is a heartfelt tribute to her late father, a jazz trumpet player, Ron King, who passed away in 2021.
The recently released single, “Shadow of Your Smile”, is special in the extraordinary way Sandi’s memory of her father transforms the entire song into an almost tangible, palpable form of grief. With the voice recording of Ron King incorporated into the very fabric of the jazz melody, it becomes more than a song, and more than a tribute. It is, in a sense, a painful evidence of the loss felt over the years, with the memory of the father’s smile being the remedy, the healing balm covering the wound.
In Sandi’s words: “Making this record allowed me to create new musical memories that included my father, which is a true gift”. So, mark your calendars for the full album release on the 22nd of October. I will be listening for sure!
