When I heard about Brandi & the Alexanders for the first time, what really got me hooked was the way they described their style as “psychedelic R&B”. Sounds tempting and deliciously promising, doesn’t it? The good news is that, indeed, they deliver that promise in a very classy style, mixing everything from retro soul, to funk, into one distinct R&B vibe.
Citing Erykah Badu, Aretha Franklin, and Sharon Jones, the woman behind the mic, Brandi Thompson, shines in this live performance of “Where You Belong” in a way that is both authentic and powerful, both vibrant and truly soulful. And yes, it is a live recording, one take, that’s it. Yet the emotion keeps lingering in your veins for much longer, leaving you truly impressed by how effortless this performance really sounds.
