Here’s a little treat to start a new week with. Nessi Gomes, from the tiny Island of Guernsey, released her debut album back in 2016. Her latest single, “Morning Mirrors”, is a mysterious trip into a subject of toxic “feminity” and its consequences, including such themes as jealousy or unwanted comparison.
This mesmerising song, with its pulsating chanting, warm yet emotional vocals, and an unobvious arrangement had its video filmed in Guernsey as well. And there is something both magnetic and claustrophobic about such tiny places where everybody knows everything about everyone. The theme of toxicity gets a completely different meaning in the “stuffiness” of such small communities. Easy to see how the “morning mirrors” mentioned in the title can become an obsession or a source of irrational fear.
So, if you want to feel trapped in emotions and experience all of the above, give this song a well deserved listen. After all, a good song, in order to do its job, should always try to immerse you in its primary emotion, even if most unpleasant, even if most uncomfortable. But that’s even better, right?
