Ever since I started sharing monthly playlists with you, each month-end comes as a bit of a surprise. Sometimes it feels like I just barely started collecting some songs and, bam!, it is already time to share them. That’s cool, though. A bit of a record of what was happening with me, musically, that I can always go back to, and in a sense, retrieve a memory.
The July mood board is quite eclectic, again. Slower than usual, perhaps, more introspective, which – I agree – for a summer month it should probably be the other way around.
We start with a beautiful rendition of “At Last” from Cyndi Lauper’s 2003 album. Hard to believe it has been more than twenty years since its release and I still, every single time, feel the same goosebumpsy shivers and the same wetness in my eyes when I listen to it.
Then on to an amazing remix of Nównøis’ “Like a River” made by The Third Mind. A sonically mind-blowing stuff, which makes me think that Nównøis could literally sing anything she’d like, and it would sound like an instant classic. This remix, despite its 5 minute length, keeps you on emotional toes from start to finish.
I also feature three new songs from some of my favourite performers: Alice Russell, Mahalia and Mysie, and top it up with Mina’s latest single, “Disobey”, which you might have read about on this blog earlier this month.
Finally, I finish it all with another jazzy flashback. Nina Simone’s performance of “I Put A Spell On You” – just because, somehow, this one, and the opening “At Last”, are like buckles holding this playlist together.
The last two tracks are bonuses for your consideration. “Sworn” by Kiasmos, whose live performance I will see at the end of September (with my first ever press accreditation, I might add!), and the new song from a personal project – “Lottery Ticket” by The $cience.
Enjoy the music!
