Following a light snd fresh pop experience of her debut single, AirEl@V (real name Valeria) is back with some darker vibes of a synth-infused electro pop. The single’s story has her visit a night club where she feels observed and oppressed by the ‘starving club’ of men. “Here’s the starving club, I feel oppressed”, she sings in the chorus, finishing with an open question that remains unanswered: “Is it provocative?”.
While we can spend ages debating the question of who is provoking whom, and with what, “Starving Club” feels more like statement of a young adult, regardless of the gender, who simply wants to have some fun. Here’s where the darkness comes in, though, along with a bitter realisation that, to some, one would simply be a sexual object the very moment they enter such place.
Back to the music though, “Starving Club” is a very interesting follow up to Valeria’s debut single, showing a different image and a more mature story-telling. Along with the synth pop influences, this tune is definitely a step in the right direction, leaving you with questions and doubts, and providing no simple answers.
