Have you ever heard about “Hikikomori”? It is when a person willfully isolates themselves in their room for months on end. No human contact WHAT-SO-EVER. The term itself is, unsurprisingly, Japanese, and it is estimated that 1.46 million people live in Japan with this condition.
For the Australian band, Extra Time, stories such as this one are the essence of music. Their fusion of jazz, rock, and soul is a backdrop for thought-provoking images. In the case of “Where Is The Light” these take the literal shape of an animated clip diving into the subject of loneliness and the state of being completely lost. The beautiful visuals were powerful enough to be officially selected for screening during the Berlin Lift Off Film Festival which is happening this month.
With the full album, “Songs With Long Titles”, just around the corner, one can only expect a continuation of this narrative. Add to it an interesting combination of sounds and arrangements, and you have a music riddle whose solving can be as engaging as trying to decipher all the meanings hidden in the first single. Good luck breaking the code!
