Amanda Fagan’s love for telling stories and turning them into music resulted in an intriguing release. Titled “The Gothics”, Fagan’s latest concept album focuses on the Gothic literature which started emerging in the 19th century. Think “Dracula”, “Frankenstein” or “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”. The last of these stories found its way into the album as “Breath on the Mirror”. The single is accompanied by a video released on YouTube. Just in time for Halloween.

“Breath on the Mirror” is a true highlight of “The Gothics”. Mysteriously orchestral, echoing of the songs by the likes of Regina Spektor, or Tori Amos, it dives deep into the story written by Robert Louis Stevenson. “I’m a nerd born in the wrong time”, says Fagan explaining her passionate love for the Gothic literature.

The iconic struggle of the good and the evil trapped in one man’s body, through Fagan’s music, becomes a reflection of the timelessness of the original story. When the good disappears without any trace, and Dr. Jekyll is not even a “breath on the mirror” anymore, the parallels to our own times become evident. “What a convenient way to blame bad conduct on the other person”, adds Fagan, “while separately maintaining your integrity and reputation”.

An 8-track album, “The Gothics” is a fascinating release whose concept not only sounds good on paper, but it also delivers some truly chilling emotions. If this article convinces you to explore the  album, make sure to also listen to the thrilling “He Never Leaves Me”. Based on my favourite Gothic novel, Bram Stoker’s “Dracula”, it will leave you in awe of Amanda Fagan’s exceptional story-telling talent.
