As you read through some of the most heart-felt posts on this website, you will quickly notice a common thread running through the music I feature. It is personal. And it is introspective. Some people might call it soft, or melancholic, or sentimental, but I simply call it: my favourite music. So, here it comes again. As another year is slowly coming to an end, we are entering a soft season.
Malou Lovis has been a frequent guest on this blog and it’s her evolution that makes me continuously curious. From the winner of The Voice of Germany back in 2023, to a self-contained artist who no longer needs name-dropping or external references. Just the voice. Her own voice and her own story-telling.
“soft season”, Malou’s latest EP, has been released today and it addresses this very transformation. Sometimes literally, sometimes between the lines. The realisation that no-one needs to perform all the time, and that slowing down and being truly oneself does not require anyone’s permission. “It’s okay if things take time”, says Malou, “if not everything works out immediately, and if I don’t have answers to every question in my late twenties”.
Over the six songs included on the EP, we observe an evolution of this message. An inward journey into one’s soul and the feeling of a complete acceptance emerging from that self-proclaimed truth. No external validation needed. Musically calm, at peace and, as the title suggests, beautifully soft, the EP emanates warm wisdom which sometimes takes others years to realise.
Highlights? The soulful “little things” and the closing track, slightly power-ballad-style, titled “safe”. Both deliver in a way which fits the current season’s change, bringing to our ears some chilled warmth of an early autumn. Think acoustic guitars and gentle pianos. And the pure comfort of knowing that we are all allowed the downtime when it feels right. The world can wait.
And it will. No questions asked.
