Let’s start our New Year’s musical journey with some hypnotic trip hop. Hailing from Cork in Ireland, here is Cordless, a duo made up of Spill and Skully. Recording together for less than a year, they are still at the beginning of their musical adventure, getting ready to share their first album at some stage in 2025.
“When I Fall Asleep” is Cordless’ smilingly minimalistic take on trip hop and downtempo. Unravelling “bolero-style”, the track fills the headphones with an increasing number of sounds. With softly dark, emotional vocals, it allows the trippy atmosphere to take over, reaching the final point by creating a cathartic-like response from the listener. And it’s exactly that release of tension which makes this song so special.
What fascinates me the most is the number of trip hop projects I have been discovering over the course of the last year. Trying to revive my favourite genre one discovery at a time was my personal mission and, with Cordless, I am happy to say, there are more of us out there than I had expected.
Thankfully, it is not a copy/paste of the 1990s sound, but more of a 21st century’s fresh take on the genre, a reboot of sorts, which deserves to go in all directions possible. So, watch this space. There is more to come!
