The more new songs by Malou Lovis come my way, the more enchanted I become. While her sound gets warmer and warmer, and her lyrics continue having this cool, light-hearted way of story-telling, every subject becomes interesting to explore. This winner of “The Voice of Germany”… Wait, that’s not right. Correction. As Malou Lovis develops a distinct voice of her own, no references are needed anymore.

“i’m not here for you” goes back to a moment in Malou’s personal life where clarity and honesty towards herself became more important than anger or frustration caused by masculine toxicity. “Maybe shut your mouth and get in line with all the other guys who waste my time”, she declares unapologetically before moving on. And while the lyrics continue with this slightly snappy but sincere attitude, the music plays innocently, creating an amazing contract which I, of course, couldn’t help but love from the first listen.
The vibe of Malou’s latest single, musically, reminds me of songs made by Corinne Bailey Rae. However, its delicate, super sweet arrangement, which stands in contradiction to the actual story, is a step in a different, more intriguing direction. The seeming innocence, honesty and a certain tongue-in-cheek attitude all create a fascinating personality. One that is both approachable and which lyrically bites at the same time. And above all, it’s a powerful statement of self-respect and self-determination. I would love to set my own boundaries this way!
