BRDN “Havoc”

There is a certain dose of poetry in the way BRDN approach their sound. Delicate synth pads, atmospheric moods, carefully designed evolution of the beat. And, yes, an actual poem, breaking their new song into two parts. This is “Havoc”, the duo’s latest delivery – a very nightly tune which feels like loneliness in a very big city after the sunset. Still full of people, but all them – strangers.

You might remember BRDN from their debut single, “Unparalleled”. In the case of “Havoc”, the vibe deepens and darkens as it explores “the quiet turbulence that comes with letting go”. The addition of the poem (“Ah, Giovinezza” by Giorgio Caproni), delivered in Italian, seems to alienate the listener even more. As if it was not supposed to be fully understood. Just like a tourist in an unknown city, separated by a language barrier. All these elements, coming together, form the space for a very introspective experience. One which invites multiple explorations of the uneasy feeling which accompanies the song.

With influences such as Moderat or HVOB, “Havoc” oscillates between a quiet reflection and an almost danceable expression. And there is a lot to discover here, as the song progresses and the mysterious chorus line (“only a whisper”) pulls you deeper and deeper into the BRDN’s sonic reality. Seeing as this is “only” their second single and that we seem to be going towards a full album, there is an unspoken promise here. One that, hopefully, will deliver a full-on look through the BRDN’s mirror – mysterious yet familiar. Too much to ask? I hope not!
