Here’s a mid-week jazz tune which will bring you a feeling of a positive melancholy. “What’s the use in saying what I know my eyes reveal”, sings Charles Becker in his latest single. Released just at the end of February, “Eyes Reveal” contains this an unmistakable New York vibe that you would expect from jazz music.
Based on a deep and low piano melody line, Charles, a native New Yorker, takes us on a stroll along the streets of his city. Passing by jazz bars, coffee shops, diners, “Eyes Reveal” feels like a dive into the urban fabric woven into the New York’s very existence. As if the city was the main focus point here. Or a conversation partner, for example.
What I like about this song the most is the healthy dose of sentimentalism, almost musical/Broadway style. It is this particular emotion, which drives the notes of the music. And in this step-by-step manner, the journey begins. Sucked into a vortex which places us directly in the middle of a New York’s street, we begin to wander. We become active participants in the experience. And that is the best reaction a song could create. A sense of belonging to a place we might not have even been to. A place shared with love and passion. And that’s some impressive songwriting here. No doubt at all!
