Live Shows Made In Luxembourg

EXCLUSIVE: Maeve Moayedi live @ Unison Studios

On Sunday, 26th October, people who had gathered at the Unison Studios in Differdange witnessed an extraordinary performance. Maeve Moayedi is a singer, composer and visual artist with roots in Luxembourg, France, Norway, Iran and Great Britain. Not extremely unusual for Luxembourg, yet still impressive, as the fusion of those roots blossoms in a reflection of sparkling connections between the various cultures. While geography of it all might sound fascinating, the art resulting from it is, put it frankly, undisputedly unforgettable.

Maeve Moayedi has a masters in Sonic Arts and Intersectional Feminism with a research into the subject matter that took five years to complete. The result? A breath-taking two-part artistic expression focused on the connection between the artist and the environment through concepts of dualism. Suffice to say, it contains photographs and sound recordings made in Iceland, where you can see and hear Maeve during her extreme photoshoot and a storm hunting endeavour. Just her and her microphone. Calling it mind-blowing is an understatement.

Maeve’s performance at the Unison Studios was nothing short of that. An intimate soirée with a sonic experiment at heart. Musically oscillating between unsettling ambient textures and elements of jazz, it brought to life music pieces which you never hear in the so-called mainstream. And, to be honest, why would you? Maeve, accompanied by a pianist and a cellist, carved an isolated rift between the space and time. One that allowed her to enchant the audience, suspended between a dream and reality, with sounds and sights sourced from her upcoming debut album.

It was all about the fusion of elements. Breathtakingly theatrical, yet raw at the core, the performance seemed to draw extreme emotions in real-time. Straight from the heart, through the looped textures, through the sounds of the piano and the cello, to the listeners’ ears. Almost with no mercy, so as to share a personal experience in its pure form, not affected by any filters. With the themes which seemed to touch upon the subjects of being lost without a home, fragments of painful memories, and finally finding peace, Maeve Moayedi allowed herself to be emotionally extreme, and painfully vulnerable at the same time.

With the silence that followed the end of the performance, one could hear individual breaths. It was that moment of connection, a fleeting shared experience, followed by an avalanche of handclaps and a huge release of emotions squeezed to the maximum. If that’s what Maeve Moayedi can do in just one hour, imagine what can happen when the full album is out next year. I, for one, cannot wait to immerse myself in Maeve’s sonic world again.
