Blu Valentine “Drunk”

With the “Half wine, half feelings, turning 2 am mess into music” intro on her Spotify profile, Blu Valentine calls it as it is. Her first single under this moniker, “Drunk”, starts with a painfully honest statement. “Just me, and my wine. Thinking of you sometimes.” Musically inspired by artists such as Jorja Smith, Olivia Dean and SZA, Blu Valentine invites us to the realm of RnB and neo soul with her own trademark style.

“Drunk is about a fragile yet powerful moment – the strength to allow oneself to feel. It’s my way of expressing emotion without filters”, says Valentina/Blu Valentine. With its intimate mood and introspective lyrics, she allows her honesty to pour out from every line of the lyrics. No filers, as she says, just the emotional pain after loosing a loved one.

Placed somewhere between the feeling of longing and the blurry state of being intoxicated with alcohol, “Drunk” brings a contrasting musical backdrop. Blu Valentine’s blend of warm RnB and soul can be interpreted as an attempt to smoothen the truth which is hard to swallow. The love is not coming back, and the bottle is empty. Add to it Blu’s enchanting vocals, full of raw emotion, and the combination is one explosive experience — “I don’t wanna drown to kill this pain”.

If based on a personal experience, exposing such fragility through a song, is definitely impressive. Let’s hope the future releases by Blu Valentine will follow the same path. And that “Drunk” is just the first step in a string of more goosebump-inducing moments.
