This is shaping up to be a jazzy Sunday. Marking the true beginning of my favourite season, “With Love” is a collaboration of the Gabriël Noerens Trio with a Belgian pianist and composer, Jef Neve. The result is a pleasantly relaxing tune which develops into a slow walk through comforting vibes and images. Think a sunny morning, with a cup of hot coffee, and some pure bliss autumn weather right outside of a closed window. The colours seamlessly change from red, to yellow, to orange. The leaves are slowly moving on the slightly chilled wind. And the rays of the sunlight flicker between the branches of a nearby tree. Such a pleasantly lazy moment.
The Gabriël Noerens Trio is made up of young musicians who met at the University of the Arts in Rotterdam. Their music proposes a delicate fusion of traditional jazz forms with creative textures. Enriched by Jef Neve’s piano, “With Love” promises and delivers a journey through inspiring jazz moods. This playful conversation between the various instruments finds its climax in the piano solo which unravels slowly and then, for a quick and exhilarating moment, takes over the entire tune. It is the joy of playing music together which draws me, as a listener, to ensembles such as this one.
Back to the image I have day-dreamed while listening to the track, the sonic paint leaving an unforgettable trace under my eyelids, isn’t this what we always look for in somebody else’s creation? An immersive communication of ideas, a wordless understanding of thoughts? You have it all here. Just press ‘play’.
