Milow „A Sanctuary of Warmth”

It is hard not to recognize Milow since his cover of “Ayo Technology”, originally performed by 50 Cent and Justin Timberlake, skyrocketed his career back in 2008. Even if you do not really know the Artist, or the song by its title, I am pretty sure you must have caught yourself humming the chorus at least once in your life. Having released nine albums, Milow’s international career is at the stage where the number of successful singles practically guarantees a great concert experience. Has Milow’s yesterday’s performance at den Atelier lived up to my expectations, though? Well, read on to find out.

Milow is currently on tour promoting his latest album, “Boy Made Out of Stars”. He stopped in Luxembourg for one night to perform a mix of the new songs and the best stuff from his back catalogue at, as he jokingly referred to it, “the smallest stage in the corner”. Yes, he meant den Atelier. The event started with a short set by Florence Arman who accompanied herself on a guitar and included a bunch of “angry” breakup songs, with my personal favourite, “Love’s the Worst”, from her 2023 EP.

Milow’s setlist felt like it was designed for a maximum emotional impact. A few new songs and then a gradual exposure to the bigger hits which sent the audience through the roof. The “Boy Made Out of Stars” album is filled up with Americana influences, featuring elements of folk, blues and country, so this mood, understandably, dominated the first part of the gig. The most emotional moment in this section arrived along with a recording of Milow’s late father whose voice, recorded back in 1975, was played from a tape at the end of “Family Tree”. Milow’s duet with his father marked the first unforgettable mental snapshot to which my thoughts continuously go back when I think of last night.

Other highlights included songs such as “One By One”, “Dancing To Sad Songs”, and the unquestionable hit-like experience with the duet of Milow and Florence Arman, and with the audience going slightly mental to the sounds of bluesy hooks in “Castaways”. The result? Goosebumps and shivers all over!

With the introduction of the older songs, you could feel an almost palpable excitement growing in the crowd. “ASAP”, “Whatever It Takes” and other popular songs turned den Atelier into one huge folky dance floor. And then – the closing moment – an extended version of “Ayo Technology”, which started with an acoustic guitar and then developed into one gigantic, psychedelic rave. You did not expect that, did you? And if I say that I had one tiny tear in my left eye, I hope you will not hold it against me.

So – Milow live. An experience beyond expectations. A full-on emotional ride which took everyone on a truly sentimental journey. And that feeling of pure human warmth coming from the stage and embracing each and every one of us with a fluffy sonic blanket of positive vibes. So, from now on, dear Milow, I will be expecting even more next times you come to visit Luxembourg. Deal? I truly hope so!
