From a song to a remix – the power of transformation. A breath of new life into a musical creation. The role of a remixer is not just to make it danceable, despite the usual perception. But to strip down the vocals and reinvent the story. That’s what a good remix should do, at least in theory.
For an Australian singer-songwriter, ANT ENOCH, the original version of his song, “Big Party”, has always been centred on “bringing light to a very intense and hard time”. With its title intended to be ironic, this guitar-driven tune, bedroom pop style, was initially all about a difficult relationship, which does not seem to work at all, and where a difficult decision, to a difficult dilemma, needs to be made. In ANT ENOCH’s own words, as soon as he heard the remix, it gave him pure joy and “summed up the brief of the project as ‘crying on the dance floor’”.
Now, here comes the remix made by a Bali-based producer, narou, where this ‘dancing through the tears’ vibe took on a more literal and real shape. Amplifying the dramatic nostalgia of the original song, narou transformed the emotion as well. “This version really broadened my horizons with what a song could be”, says ANT ENOCH. “Never in my wildest dreams did I think this song could be played on Ibiza at sunset. Now, with this version, it feels realistic!”.
With the transformation complete, the final effect is a liberating experience where the overall mood gains a fresh perspective on the same topic. Turning and twisting the original message into something open to a new interpretation. And what that interpretation really is, it is now entirely up to you. Compare and contrast, and while you’re at it, enjoy the music!
