Rainbow Laces “Touch”

From one of the last albums to premiere in 2024, comes this electrifying house tune called “Touch”. Part of a sonic manifesto, an unapologetic tribute to the sound of the 1990s raves.

With its spoken-word vocals, both sensual and almost robotic, “Touch” brings to mind feelings of participating in a clubbing experience which is more than just a dance. It’s the feeling of closeness, not necessarily physical, which brought people together to partake in a commonly shared moment of unity. “Close but not enough”, whispers the female narrator, whose voice you can hear throughout the album. Its title, “F*CK CLUB”, leaves no room for interpretation, you know exactly where we are.

The sensation of deep sensuality, sticky drops of sweat rolling down the skin during an ecstatic dance, and the air filled with smoke from the fog machine. This album, in the words of its creator, is a love letter to the night. “A reminder that music, like desire, is best experienced without apology”. And this is exactly what Rainbow Laces proposes as a soundtrack to the last days of this weird year. A fusion of house, techno, breakbeat and trip hop arranged into a sensually charged story, an emotional ritual centred on a dance floor where there’s “no time to think, just time to feel”.

Having listened to the entire album a few times now, I can safely say it is one of the coolest indie electronic releases of 2024. It is bold and fearless, yet its power lies in the straightforwardness of the music experience which literally places you in the middle of a club, no questions asked, a stamp on your wrist, and pulsating strobe lights blinding your eyes. A fleeting moment, with its fleeting beauty, never to be repeated again. Unless, of course, you choose to press “Play” one more time. Which I’d strongly advise you to do.
