Charles Becker “Love Is Not So Far Away”

There is something incredibly tempting in Charles Becker’s approach to jazz. Embracing the darkness, sonically speaking, is how I would describe it, even if it was not the original intention. Add to it a dash of melancholia, and you have the best track Charles has released so far.

As a native New Yorker, Charles Becker has jazz music running in his veins. His sound, especially the piano, feels so natural. Translating his experiences and emotions into the language of jazz sounds effortless. Although, I am pretty sure “effortless” is not the right word. And that a lot of life and unique life moments have built this level of musical sensitivity.

“Love Is Not So Far Away” feels like a story without a happy ending. Love always being “not so far away” is how I interpreted the lyrics which combine the feelings of fleeting hope and the immediate disappointment. Pretty clever, in my humble opinion. Often described as “an antidote to the frenetic energy” of New York, the song also taps into the urban sound of one of the busiest and most iconic cities in the world. This combination makes you enjoy the sentimental vibe while discovering the jazz ornaments and the overall, pretty dark arrangement.

If it hasn’t come across as obvious yet, let me simply say that I have totally fallen in love with this tune. “Love Is Not So Far Away” is how I like my jazz. Less optimistic, more melancholic, definitely darker, and undeniably addictive. This is where my musical imagination thrives. But I hope you will discover your own approach to this impressive song once you’ve had a listen.
