Jenny Gillespie Mason “Rungs of Love”

Jenny Gillespie Mason has spend more than 10 years exploring psychedelic pop, jazz and electronic music through her project, Sis. Her latest endeavour, however, marks a return to (mostly) acoustic folk – the genre she started with as a teenager. Folk is not necessarily the type of music you see and hear often on this website, so I hope, by now, you know that this must be special. And it is, without any doubt in my mind.

Beautifully delicate and warm, “Rungs of Love” explores the concept of human love being a “ladder” toward higher consciousness. Here, the metaphoric rungs represent steps that we all can take as our love grows stronger and gets more settled. In that sense, it is a journey which progresses while our feelings and devotion to another person truly deepen.

What I immediately (and unexpectedly) loved about “Rungs of Love” was the consistent musical vision, a sonic intention to convey a spiritual message dressed as a poem. Produced by Noah Georgeson, known for his work with Joanna Newsom and Devendra Banhart, it invites you to daydream and relax at the same time. The sounds, acoustic guitar, strings, feel as if there were “merely” a decoration, and a fleeting philosophical construct cleverly disguised as music. Or, if you prefer just the music, then it’s probably one of the softest tunes you will have heard in a while.

And if you would like to experience more, Jenny’s forthcoming album, “In the Safety of the Light”, is due 12th June. I already know I will be one of the first listeners.
