Felsmann + Tiley Video Update: “Always You” + “Seeker”

Following the release of their extremely fascinating concept album, “Protomensch”, Felsmann + Tiley continue the promotion with the reveals of music videos. These videos are not only complementary to the intense ambient vibes contained on the album. They reach out to different parts of our consciousness, and our sense of ethics. They also try to bring an element of doubt, an inspiration to a deeper thought on a number of subjects. It’s the other side of “Protomensch”, a “complementary” one. Almost like a bonus which makes you work even harder to decipher the hidden meanings, unsettling story-telling and eye-opening messages.

Always You” focuses on a story of a woman facing a younger version of herself. It is a very delicate approach to a difficult but contemporary issue. Facing the Alzheimer’s disease. The story told without any mentoring tone, it is just – only “just” – a depiction of how lost and vulnerable one may feel when faced with memory loss. Losing perception of oneself must feel terribly lonely. Yet, none of us can be sure of that as any first-hand experience comes too late, at the moment when we’re already cut off from the outside world. Whether it’s sad, or comforting, we will never know.

On the other hand, we have “Seeker”. An intense story which might shake you to the core. Here we have a woman who discovers a chip implanted in her brain. Place: a dystopian hospital. Purpose: to rewrite her memory and identity. As we watch the protagonist try and reclaim her own mind, the build up of the emotional tension is insanely difficult to witness. Set somewhere between a dark story and a psychological thriller, Felsmann + Tiley’s soundtrack adds to the feeling of being watched, haunted, and trapped.

“Protomensch”, the album, had its premiere mid-February this year, so it hasn’t even been two full months since the release. Yet, the quality of the music videos published in order to illustrate the tracks is sending them, put it simply, through the roof. It’s absolutely mind-blowing to observe how these synthesiser-based tracks, purposely devoid of the beats, but not of the rhythms, sound like continuous alarm bells. Wake up calls of sorts, which do not give you easy answers, but they definitely leave you feeling rattled, shaken and with an unspoken feeling of being pressured to take some action. What action this should be – it is for each and every one of us to know.
