With the national Eurovision selections well underway, here’s a song that truly stands out. Malou Lovis’ “When I’m With You” is running to represent Germany this year, with the German finals taking place on the 28th February.
You might remember Malou as the winner of the 2023 Voice of Germany competition and my interview with her, which I had featured here. As time goes by, Malou’s talent flourishes and shines more and more. Her songs, packed with raw and honest emotions, touch a very sensitive string in my musical soul. With, yes, the word ‘soul’ being the most important keyword here. Both in the meaning of emotional purity, as well as the music genre.
“When I’m With You” is a soulful indie pop tune. A declaration of love sung to Malou’s girlfriend. Full of delicate notes, romantic accents but, at the same time, not shying away from what’s most true and simple. A music arrangement which some might wrongly call “too elemental” for Eurovision, but it is actually absolutely necessary! Just like expressing true love comes with ease and unstoppable passion, the music, indeed, does not need to be overdone. After all, a genuine feeling does not require fanfares or glitter. It is beautiful in its purest and simplest of forms.
And that’s the main value of “When I’m With You” in my humble opinion. A queer pop song that celebrates a true feeling without being excessive. And the combination of musical sincerity with pure love at the core makes it really shine. Beautiful soulful melody, beautiful lyrics, full of uplifting joy and an abundance of warmth. I, for one, cannot wait to hear the results of the German selections. Fingers crossed, Malou Lovis. I hope you will make it to the international finals!
