Here’s a trip that you might not have been expecting. Intense, dark, musically radical, and absolutely, sonically mind-blowing. Felsmann + Tiley’s upcoming album, “Protomensch”, has already delivered some emotionally distressing tunes. But their latest single, “OPIOID” is simply bringing it to another level. As the title suggests, we are entering the realm of turmoil and paranoia caused by intoxication.
With “OPIOID”, and its interpretation, everything is possible. The emotional charge is pushed to an overdrive, unravelling in a way that suggests an emotional charge of the highest level. The sound design is pure gold. The synths, which are driving the increasing tension, drill themselves into the listener’s mind. And the listening experience is not only about the growing sense of unease and worry. It is a warning. An alarming one-word message which needs no explanations. The shivers you will feel after the last sound of the track fades out are sufficient enough to understand that we are dealing with a serious, and extremely powerful wake-up call.
As a social commentary, “OPIOID” goes beyond the expectations associated with a music production. It not only addresses the human struggle with substance use and abuse. It is also an eye-opening commentary to the entire society’s attempts to numb down the aftereffects of the issue. To sweep it under a rug. To ignore it collectively and to pretend its existence is somebody else’s problem. Yes, one short track does all of the above. Call it genius, call it visionary. Suffice to say, if you let yourself immerse in Felsmann + Tiley’s disturbing sonic message of a tune, you will be left shaken to the core. And maybe even quite unpleasantly woken up from the collective dream we all choose to dream, rather than to accept the inconvenient truth.
At least, that’s the plan. Ambitious, and delivered with precision and perfection.
