On his Spotify profile, Chris de Sarandy refers to himself as a “small town boy with a big man’s voice”. Big man’s voice and big power ballads, I might add. Think Adele’s piano anthems meeting Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License” vibes. Emotions cranked up to the max, and lyrics filled with painful sadness.
“Hurts Like This” grabs you by the throat from the first seconds and, for a few moments, leaves you breathless. Another break up song, you would say, and you’d probably be right, if it wasn’t for that painful sensation that keeps lingering in your mind even when the song is over. And as much as I am trying to avoid the cliché, that, yes, we can all relate, that, yes, we all had a heart broken at some stage, there is still something unescapable that makes me come back to this tune. Despite the sadness and despite the painful memories which, naturally, resurface during listening.
There is no antidote here. “Hurts Like This”, if you are ready for it, will give you a vividly powerful flashback to your own past experiences. The lesson, I guess, is to embrace those memories and watch the pain go away as the song fades out. That’s some pretty intense stuff, isn’t it?
