If you remember the Norwegian duo called sgrow, you’ll be in for an amazing treat. Vilde Ilkama Nupen, one half of sgrow, known artistically under her alias ILKAMA, has just released an album you would not like to miss. Titled “ILKAMANIA”, this captivating electronic soundscape invites you to explore experimental beats, immerse yourself in ILKAMA’s sonic world, and her moments of euphoric musical “mania”.
“All the tracks on this album have that in common”, says ILKAMA, “that they all came to be in more or less one sitting, and for that reason I connect them to a sense of freedom and in some instances escapism.” Expressing herself in her own unique way, she draws eclectic inspirations from a myriad of genres, a thing that Scandinavian artists, Björk included, have somehow in common.
My personal highlight of “ILKAMANIA” is a song called “Den som blir” (“The One Who Stays”), an absolute drum-driven-frenzy, a rhythmical madness which serves as a backdrop for beautiful vocals sung in Norwegian. “I’m always the one who stays behind for a little too long”, go the lyrics. “Deep inside, I often feel that I should leave”.
The overwhelming sense of refreshing liberation from musical boundaries is one of the reasons why I fell in love with “ILKAMANIA”. The pure creation process, infinite sonic possibilities, and an unrestricted stream of consciousness, they all feel like a huge wave of outpouring emotion, crystal clear with its message, extremely flexible, yet warm and soothing at the same time. So now, dear Readers, it is high time to press play, and let yourselves disappear for half an hour.
