Interview: 22HERTZ

22HERTZ, led by Ralf Muller, was formed in the heart of Toronto’s vibrant music scene. The band’s trademark is a dark, industrial style full of electric sounds and dystopian vibes. The apple doesn’t fall far from Nine Inch Nails in this case, which really serves as a compliment. 22HERTZ take their inspiration into a higher level, producing an electrifying mix of genres and creating their own niche. Following the release of the band’s second album, “Adrenochrome”, I have briefly spoken to Ralf Muller, and here is what he had to say about the new release.

Bartek: You say that you are “making music that the radio won’t play”. Why do you think that is?

Ralf: Because the genre of music I am creating is not sought after from radio program directors. Labels do not want to work with me because they’ll make less money than someone who sounds like Taylor Swift.

When working on your latest album, “Adrenochrome”, you took everything into your own hands.

No one else is interested, so somebody’s got to do it.

What are the main challenges you have been facing?

It’s very stressful and a lot of work compared to the traditional way.

Similarly, are there any advantages that would make you recommend this approach to others?

Not really, unless you are really insistent in getting it done. Oh, and insane, as I am.

What is the main inspiration behind “Adrenochrome”?

Basically, therapy and the need to say what’s on my mind. Lots of personal struggles and stresses I had to deal with.

Which artist influenced you the most throughout your music experience?

For this project, it was basically an older Nine Inch Nails sound.

Your favourite song on “Adrenochrome”?

Maybe Gravity? Because, despite the imagery from the music video, it’s really about my struggles in the music industry.

The overall mood of “Adrenochrome” is quite dark and dystopian. What emotion(s) do you want your audience to feel when listening to it?

You nailed it, but people are going to feel whatever they want to feel.

Plans for the near future?

Promoting now as much I am capable of. Touring? We will see what happens, but I’d love to.
