Released today, “Unparalleled”, by a German project, BRDN (pronounced as “Burden”), will have you switch off all the lights and listen to it in complete darkness. As it should be. This blend of electronica and alt-pop is painted in dark colours, melancholic, unsettling sounds, and beautifully haunted vocals.
Focusing on acceptance, regret and fragile hope, this slow-tempo tune sucks you in into its realm. And does not really want to let go. Musically focused on the shivering sounds of analogue synthesisers, the storytelling invites you to reminisce on a situation where you felt hopeless, yet hopeful at the same time. This conflict of emotions is where you face your truth and, if ever experience in real life, you find a sonic platform to confront and resolve.
The list of BRDN’s influences is long and impressive. Massive Attack, James Blake, Moderat, to name a few. Not surprisingly, “Unparalleled” draws those influences and starts owning them as soon as you hear the first notes of the song. Between trip hop and ambient electronica, BRDN attempt to claim a part of this niche. And they do deliver, in my humble opinion, as “Unparalleled” is their best song so far. Intriguing, captivating, and relatable. Give it a listen and find out for yourselves.
